International Yoga Day June 21st
Christchurch.

Event over:

The first International Day of Yoga (IDY) was celebrated with great enthusiasm all across the world on June 21, 2015, engaging a wide cross-section of people from all walks of life. 25 people attended and after the formalities and a few technical hitches, the audience watched an asana demonstration followed by twenty minutes of gentle stretching and 15 minutes of  vigorous pranayama before a talk on meditation followed by tea and chat.

Why Yoga?

Well why not? Like most, you have found moments of temporary peace and happiness, I say temporary because peace and happiness do not generally last a very long.  Someone gives you a gift and you feel nice until pressures of life distract. Likewise when you give someone a gift, you get a moment of pleasure when you see their happiness but by the end of the day you have both returned to what may be termed your ‘normal’state of mind.

But have you experienced times of joy that endured more than minutes, more than hours, more than an entire day?  Within the ideas of yoga is the idea that we should all be happy and joyful. Not just for minutes or hours, but for the entirety of our life and that peace should not be something we wish for, peace should be a fundamental human right.

Sadhguru summarises the
concept of a yoga day

We humans have tried everything in our search for happiness, we have taken all kinds of drugs, not eaten, over eaten, become hermits, become socialites, invented gods and technologies and in the process we’re close to destroying the planet we rely on and ending life on earth as we know it.

In our search for happiness we have been looking outwards to the world and upwards to our ideas of God’s. We have developed beliefs instead of knowledge and these beliefs separate us from each other whereas yoga does not require any belief and the process of yoga is one of unity and community.

I could right another hundred thousand words here, but instead I invite you to set aside the next hour and listen to the video below.  If you’re pressed for time, you could skip the very informative nine minute introduction to this video titled the ‘Relevance of Yoga in Modern Life’ – Talk by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
