My first yoga class

As a weekend workshop

par3aThe venue was a modest home near Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The weather was comfortably warm and the class attended by about 15 people.

Over the two days we listened to talks on yoga philosophy, stretched our bodies every which way and somehow seemed all too easy. We did some deep breathing exercises, relaxed and ate vegetarian food.

Altogether it was just a nice relaxing couple of days and I didn’t really perceive that I was making any difference to myself until I got home after the weekend.

The difference I noticed within myself over the next few days was that I felt lighter and happier than I had been for some time not that I felt particularly unhappy because life was happening quite nicely.

Occasionally I did a few of the yoga exercises, but the feeling that weekend stayed with me and it was after three months that the feeling began to subside. I knew then that there was more to yoga than I first realised..

Like any normal person in New Zealand society I knew that after a few drinks I was really happy for a short time. I knew that after a few puffs of wacky baccy one got a high that lasted a short time. But I’d spent two days doing a little exercise and the feeling lasted for three whole months.

At that point I knew I had to know more about this, so I quit my job, packed up my bags, moved into an ashram In Wellington New Zealand where I was fortunate to have access to a number of well-trained and experienced teachers.

I was soon dropped into teaching, completed the course with the International yoga teachers Association and later spent several years with Martyn Jackson and the Australian School of yoga.

The students who attend my classes today no doubt like me feel a little confused by some of the terminology, but following a class they feel wonderful for a few days.
