Massage; A sensual experience

There is no such thing as a non sensual massage

sdrIn New Zealand before the decriminalisation of prostitution, the word ‘massage’ was the cover name for a great many sex workers businesses. Because word usage has persisted over many generations there are still sectors of society where people who hear the word ‘massage’ automatically satiate massage with sex.

Then came a refinement; people were learning that massage is primarily a nonsexual therapeutic service and people coined the phrase ‘sensual massage’. Depending on the establishment, this usually included some form of sexual contact and pleasure beyond the boundaries of any therapeutic establishment.

Despite our crude use of words, all massage is sensual because it involves touch. Now cast your mind back; was there a moment in school where the teacher when discussing human biology and perception mentioned that we perceive the world through our senses.

“To be sensual~ I think, is to respect and rejoice in the force of life itself~ and to be present in all that one does~ from the effort of loving to the breaking of bread.” ~┬áJames Baldwin

Our entire life is a sensory experience

For instance; as you are reading these words, the variations in light quality and density from this screen you are looking at is radiating through your retinas. That light registers on the sensory perceptors behind your eyes which in turn send a signal to your brain. Your intelligence cross-references what you are seeing and then you on the basis of your past experience understand the individual words and then the combined meaning of all the words.

So you do not actually see the words on your computer screen, in fact you don’t even see your computer screen. All you see is the reflected light and the computer screen and what is on it are actually constructed in your mind.

This means that when you go for a massage, when the therapist is touching your body, the sense receptors inside your skin send messages to your brain which then decides if that sensation is pleasant or unpleasant.

Of course massage can be soft or firm. When the massage is soft, it is sometimes referred to as sensual however this is an error in our language because even when the pressure is strong to the point where it hurts, that is also sensual.

Many people are getting straight with this understanding and terminology. So if you go for a massage, sensation and sensuality is the technology of experience. If you are a massage therapist and someone comes to you asking for a sensual massage, you can simply ask if they’d like it to be hard or soft. But in light of common language usage, you should also ask if they wanted a sexual massage and then you can explain that you don’t do it.

If you happen to be a person who enjoys massage and you are visiting a therapist then you will understand that if you ask for a sensual massage, the therapist might look at you as if you are stupid and then they will generally assert that you might have come to the wrong place.

Can you adjust to the fact that your entire life experience happens entirely within the confines of your own body and mind, and that no matter how big or marvellous the universe is, our perception is entirely through our senses?
