International Day of Yoga

Supported by the United Nations and the Government of India

mysteryThe government of India and the United Nations have organized the International Day of Yoga is a special event to be celebrated annually on June 21st in recognition of India’s ancient traditions and the values that yoga offers the modern world.

The relationship between the solstice and the yogic sciences goes back to the very dawn of yoga, and is based on the relationship between the human body and the larger planetary body. June 21 is in fact the solstice day, winter in the southern hemisphere, summer in the north. So the yoga day is aligned with a time of change in the earth’s cycle which provides greater opportunity for transformation.

An International day of Yoga event is held annually in Christchurch and organised by the Indian Social and Cultural Club (Facebook) typically the Sunday closest to June 21st. The first year when the IDY was instituted, an event was held in the Fendalton Community Hall, but for the past two years a shorter yoga class has been held at the modern Te Hapau centre, 341 Halswell Road.

Why Yoga?

A scientific process for the betterment of humanity

Like most, you have found moments of temporary peace and happiness, I say temporary because peace and happiness do not generally last a very long.  Someone gives you a gift and you feel nice until pressures of life distract. Likewise when you give someone a gift, you get a moment of pleasure when you see their happiness but by the end of the day you have both returned to what may be termed your ‘normal’state of mind.

But have you experienced times of joy that endured more than minutes, more than hours, more than an entire day?  Within the ideas of yoga is the idea that we should all be happy and joyful. Not just for minutes or hours, but for the entirety of our life and that peace should not be something we wish for, peace should be a fundamental human right.

We humans have tried everything in our search for happiness, we have taken all kinds of drugs, not eaten, over eaten, become hermits, become socialites, invented gods and technologies and in the process we’re close to destroying the planet we rely on and ending life on earth as we know it.

In our search for happiness we have been looking outwards to the world and upwards to our ideas of God’s. We have developed beliefs instead of knowledge and these beliefs separate us from each other whereas yoga does not require any belief and the process of yoga is one of unity and community.

Sadhguru summarises the
concept of a yoga day

I could right another hundred thousand words here, but instead I invite you to set aside the next hour and listen to the video below.  If you’re pressed for time, you could skip the very informative nine minute introduction to this video titled the ‘Relevance of Yoga in Modern Life’ – Talk by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
